The circle representation is called a Tai-Chi symbol.
Yin and Yang can be explained as a duality that can only co-exist; or dependent opposites that must always be in balance. This evolved from a belief of mutually dependant opposites that cannot live without the other. Examples on the left show some examples symbolised by this.
The Eastern view - there is no right or wrong, only balance, transformation, interaction & dependent opposition.

The Five Elements Theory
Wood burns producing Fire and leaves behind Earth, which is a source of Metal that cools create condensation as Water which then becomes the nourishment for the Wood.
This theory applied to the cycles of nature.
